Story of the BIG BUGSA collection of garden creatures by sculptor David Rogers. These little creatures which we often take for granted outnumber us one million to one. Many live in communal groups working as one for the common good of all. Their ranks include engineers, soldiers, weightlifters, weavers, hunters, stalkers, gatherers, and even royalty. When you take this remarkable and diverse group of "hidden gardeners" and recreate them on a gargantuan scale using all-natural materials, you have the Big Bugs. The effect is a role reversal of dimension and perception. The sculptures are created using various combinations of whole trees found standing or fallen dead, cut green saplings selectively harvested from the willow family, dry branches, and other forest materials. The inherent uniqueness of these materials: their different shapes, colors and textures provide these sculptures with character, definition, and a sense of motion. Since its debut in 1994 at the Dallas Arboretum, the Big Bugs exhibit has traveled all across the USA. It consistently brings in swarms (indeed!) of new audiences to all the venues it visits. It provides a visually stunning platform for educational programs and interaction, one of the main goals of the Big Bugs exhibit. Big Bugs also has the effect of helping create greater public awareness of its host institution as a fun and interesting year-round educational resource, with a concomitant boost in attendance. This increase in attendance leads to a broader membership base and the kind of community involvement that brings in the resources needed for the institution to grow, expand and thrive, creating opportunities for even greater outreach. |
